TONE, The Heart of Chiropractic
D.D. Palmer discovered Chiropractic in 1895 and said that it was based on the principle of tone. Tone means tension, level of vibration. Tension. Where in your body do you hold it in excess? And why? No, I’m not playing psychiatrist. Tension accumulates in your body as a result of 3 kinds of trauma; physical, chemical and emotional/mental. Sometimes the cause of the tension in a part of your body is obvious; you fell and broke a bone. You drink 12 cups of coffee a day. You’re angry all the time. Sometimes the cause is not so obvious. It is up to each of us to find the best and healthiest ways to deal with our regions of excess tension. Here’s a glimpse into tension and how it manifests in our bodies. From larger to smaller; the entire body, organs, glands, tissues, cells, molecules, atoms, to parts of atoms all require a certain degree of tension to manifest and function properly (the way they were designed to function). Science tells us that they are all different manifestations of energy, vibrating at various tones or frequencies. As a boy, I loved to fly those wind-up, rubber-band airplanes. But what happened when I tried to get too much tension out of the rubber band by over winding? It snapped. And not just rubber, but bone, steel and any other matter as well. Excessive tension creates diminished function, disharmony, weakness, and a greater tendency to injury. One of the more obvious places to understand excess tension is in muscles. In your body, every muscle has a certain degree of tension in it at all times. Your neck muscles have more tone in them when you hold your head up. Your heart always pumps till the day you die. Your diaphragm works for as long as you breathe. The tone in your legs, your arteries, your stomach, your colon, your back changes all the time, depending on when a part is called upon to work. This is accomplished by the nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves), which is responsible for the level of tone in not just muscles, but every cell in your body. Every organ, gland and tissue. Science also tells us that changes in the spine (subluxation) alter the tone of the nervous system, potentially weakening any part of the body, or the body as a whole. Too much or too little tone in any part of the body creates dysfunction, dis-ease, and weakness. These lead to diminished coordination of all parts; a greater propensity for injury or illness, a weakened immune system, disease and death. Chiropractic addresses the tone in your nervous system. We do not attempt to increase or decrease the tone, but remove obstructions in the body’s communication system. By doing this, we allow the wisdom of the body to determine the proper tone necessary for every part of the body at every moment of time. After all, no doctor or scientist on the planet could possibly know even 1% of the entire body’s needs at any moment. The three types of traumas mentioned above impact the spine and nervous system causing subluxation. Chiropractic is about locating and correcting vertebral subluxations so the body and mind can function with more ease. Ease does not mean zero tension; it means just the right amount. We want to be able to think with ease, to walk with ease, to digest with ease, to breathe with ease. Everything! We want to be able to do everything with more ease! That’s what health is all about. Ease. Life is better with more ease. There are many ways to address the tension and bring about more ease in your body. Chiropractic is very direct, making it one of the best.
